Create a Dataset

If you have project datasets or code to share with the MSD-LIVE community or the general public, you can add a dataset to the Data Repository.

In order to create a dataset in MSD-LIVE:

  • You must belong to at least one project
  • The dataset must be directly funded by and relevant to that project
  • When uploading your data, you must select one or more projects to associate your submission with
  • One project is assigned the special role of "Reviewing Project"

Set Dataset Permissions

You may mark submissions as:

  • Public — visible to everyone
  • Restricted — visible only to members of the associated projects

Enrich Your Dataset

To make your dataset more discoverable and useful to others, consider enriching it with additional metadata and features:

  • Spatial Metadata — add location information to help others understand where your data was collected or applied
  • Enable Exploration — allow users to browse and preview your dataset files directly in the platform
  • Create Example Notebooks — provide sample notebooks that demonstrate how to work with your data

Mint a DOI with OSTI

When you create or edit a dataset in msd-live, you have the option to assign a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) through OSTI. A DOI provides a permanent, citable link to your dataset, making it easier for others to find and reference your work.

To mint a DOI:

  1. While filling out the dataset upload form, enable the DOI option
  2. Provide the required metadata (title, authors, description, etc.)
  3. Submit or publish your dataset

Publish Your Dataset

When you are ready to publish your dataset, click Submit For Review. A curator from the Reviewing Project will verify that your submission meets MSD-LIVE Policies and follows best practices. If changes are needed, the curator will contact you. After approval, your dataset is published and the DOI is minted automatically.
